Better Men
Sitting down I watch another lousy candidate making a mundane speech. My expression is, admittedly, vacant and disinterested. He rambles about taxes, cash, missilies and security, or something—Don’t take my word on it, I wasn’t listening.
I find myself far more interested in the crowd. Noisy, cheering, enthusiastic. These masses are a testament, a commandment, that I am supposed to be here. These are the people who are going to love me. I sit up straighter, smiling at those who’s glances wander off from the candidate. A smile that is deliberately electrifying. A smirk, if you may.
Some.. singer, said it once. There are the ones that entertain and the ones that observe. A few people who find themself eye-to-eye with me either look away, embarassed, or continue to gaze. Whether it be awe or aggravation, frankly, I do not care. I can captivate.
Somehow, I am patient at the moment. Despite my boredom, I’m not even fidgeting like I usually do. Earlier, I’d been crossing and uncrossing my legs, shifting my weight around this chair. That’s a good thing. An assurance I can focus myself directly onto the crowd.
As the candidate begins to finish his speech, I tilt my head expectantly. Surely he will atleast have an interesting exit. But someone catches my attention, all of a sudden, tapping at my shoulder from behind. “You’ve got this, okay? You’re- you’re up next.” He smiled at me. Gustave. This little idiot of a man, I rarely ever see him smiling so.. Endearingly.
For a moment, I remembered these masses searched for better men. Better leaders for this damned nation, and I agree. This nation, honestly, is a stinking pile of garbage nobody is willing to even recycle. Whatever, I’ve got this in the bag. Whatever they’re searching for, I’m Mrs. Ten Times Better.
“More than ‘got this’, mind you. Everyone’s in the palm of my hand!” I whisper to him, but I find myself smiling more affectionately than I intend to. Standing up and walking to the podium, I don’t look back—but I do know—he is looking out for me. Well then, I guess I’ll put on a show he won’t forget. I’ll win every single one of these hearts infront of me, just like I did before!
