The reason I believe skaterbunny doesn’t work is through how their characters contrast each other,
The reason these two are shipped together is through two reasons, 1, at the benefit of infected, infected likes bunnies and he likes technology, Melanie is a combination of this, but this only serves one character, which is infected, which i will also get into later
Or, their canon dynamic : friendship, these two characters are friends, and romantic pairings work out better when they are on positive terms.
Getting into the fact I believe this ship doesn’t work is through getting into both of these characters, a crucial part of meanies character is that she is a people pleaser, Melanie is not a self serving character, she doesn’t help herself whatsoever, she is told by pest that she helps people too much, and never leaves room to help herself.
Melanie is a character that needs someone to lean on, not in the sense that she is helpless, but in the sense that she needs it for herself, Melanie gives herself out there too much, and never leaves room to help herself, and infected is someone who needs help.
Infected is someone who is sick, obviously, given his name, he is someone who would suck the life out of Melanie if she kept trying and trying to help him, infected is someone who refuses help at that, becoming outright hostile towards the idea of help, if Melanie were to try, it would exhaust her, this relationship where she would constantly give and try to help someone who doesn’t want help, and will, at some point, not be able to be helped, due to decomposing.
I state this entirely in the sense of their relationship being romantic, of course, if they were friends, they could work, when it comes to friends, you do not have to give yourself to the other person constantly, but when it comes to romantic relationships, you are more obligated to the other person, due to your love, you would be there for them if they needed it, skaterbunny doesn’t work due the fact that infected doesn’t want help, infected could be helped, but he doesn’t come to terms with it.
It would be a push and pull dynamic, kind of… Melanie would have to stay there for infected, trying to constantly help him, due to her habits, but infected would have to reject this, due to the fact he doesn’t want help, infected would reject what she wants for him, which would leave them with a unhealthy dynamic where they can’t help one another, they can’t rely on one another due to the fact that infected is sick and cant help himself, and Melanie only wants to help others.
It’s like putting two magnets together, but on the other sides, that causes a repulsion, these needs and traits these two have cancel each other out, they aren’t able to work due to how they cancel out.
TL:DR : Melanie and infected have traits that cancel each other out and create a repulsion affect if they were to be in a romantic relationship, this is why I believe they wouldn’t be able to work as a romantic pairing, of course, they can work as a friendship, but they fall apart if they are put into a romantic stance.
At the end of the day, I cant control what you like, and the fact that it would be unhealthy isn’t necessarily bad, but this text post is to show what can be unappealing of the ship, I believe that the fact that the ship in present day would be unhealthy is unappealing, I believe that this ship can also be incorporated correctly in the matter of the stories direction, if infected were to get help, it could work.
Like what you like, but i think it kind of sucks, and this is why.
